The expedition "Clockwork Ocean" was realized by an international research team led by the Helmholtz Zentrum Geesthacht.

More than forty other oceanographers are involved under the leadership of Prof. Burkard Baschek, Institute Director of the Institute of Coastal Research at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht (HZG). In addition to various HZG groups, the Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research, Warnemünde (IOW), the University of Lübeck, the FH Aachen, the Havariekommando Cuxhaven, the FU Berlin and the Alfred Wegener Institute Bremerhaven are also participants in the project. The American contributors to the expedition Clockwork Ocean are the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. The tidal forecasts and current streams will be predicted by the German Bundesamt für Seeschifffahrt und Hydrographie (BSH), and the daily weather forecasts are provided by the German Weather Forecast Institution (Deutscher Wetterdienst, DWD).
